basic explanation of what cancer

Cancer is not a disease but many diseases. In fact, there are over 100 different types of cancer. All cancers begin in cells. Cells are the building blocks that form the tissues of the body. To better understand what cancer is, you need to know how normal cells become cancerous. The body is composed of many cell types. These cells grow and divide to produce new cells as the body need.when cells age, they die and are replaced by new cells.
But sometimes this orderly process of cell division goes awry. New cells form when the body does not need. When this happens, the old cells die when they should not. These cells are not needed can form a mass of tissue. This mass of tissue is called a tumor. Not all tumors are cancerous. Tumors can be benign or malignant.

  • Benign tumors are not cancerous. Generally can be extracted (removed). In most cases, these tumors do not grow back. Cells from benign tumors do not spread to other tissues or water or body parts.
  • Malignant tumors are cancerous. cells in these tumors can invade surrounding tissue and spread (watered) to other organs. When cancer spreads or water from one body part to another is called metastasis.
The name of the cancer depends on the organ or cell type where it started or originated. For example, cancer that begins in the stomach is called cancer stomach. Some cancers do not form tumors. For example, leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside bones).
